After the film hit the screens around the world, tourists started visiting Kanchanaburi to see this amazing bridge. Kanchanaburi lives off the tourism attracted by what people remember from the movie. But there's much more beyond the nasty history of Japanese mistreating. Kanchanaburi, a central Thailand province is one of the most beautiful parts of Thailand. Rich in natural beauty, Kanchanaburi has many National Parks, forests, mountains, rivers and so on. Isaan

Isaan by Clemens

Isaan is the poorest region of
Thailand, due to the poor land and weather conditions and to a lack of development. The following table, with data for 1998 from the National Statistical Office, will give an idea of how Isaan compares to the rest of the country. Many tourist accommodation options have sprung up along the Mekong River, including bed and breakfasts, inns, taverns, lodges and guesthouses; the other rivers of Isaan are The Loei, Songkhram, Chi and Mun. Isaan girls arriving in Bangkok find that they can only earn the 300THB per day they were earning in the country. And while you can live on 300THB per day in Isaan, it is a much harder achievement in Bangkok. Isaan cuisine borrows heavily from Lao cuisine and is distinctly different from central Thai cooking, although there has been a considerable amount of cross-pollination. Perhaps the best-known Isaan dish is som tam, a spicy salad prepared from unripe papayas. Neverless Isaan is a wonderful place. It´s like anything else in Thailand, the whole region has its unique charm.

Chiang Rai

Chiang Rai by Clemens

Chiang Rai had a glorious place in history. It was the first capital of the independent, northern Thai Kingdom, Lanna Thai, established in 1262. Chiang Rai was held by the Burmese for many years, coming under Siamese rule only in 1786 (four years after Bangkok became capital). Whilst little is known of its history in earlier times, Chiang Rai's fortunes have latterly been closely linked with those of Chiang Mai and Chiang Saen (60 km (37 mi.) away). Chiang Rai province covers some 11,678 square kilometers with a population of 1.23 million. The average elevation is 580 meters above sea level, Myanmar borders on the north, and Laos on the north and northeast. Chiang Rai offers a quite and serene destination for tourists coming from all across the world. Hotels in Chiang Rai cater to the needs of both the business and leisure travelers. Chiang Rai is famous among the Thais for its unspoilt nature, unique cultures, beautiful mountains and for having the coolest weather in the country. The pace of life is relaxed, the food is delicious and nature beckons to be explored. Chiang Rai has become a major trekking center for journeys by foot, boat, mountain-bike or elephant to remote Akha, Karen, Lasu, Lahu, Yao and Shan hill-tribes. For some, Chiang Rai makes a better base for getting off the beaten track than Chiang Mai, and the town itself is not nearly as sprawling as its sister to the southwest.

Chiang Mai

Chiang Mai by Clemens

Chiang Mai was a quiet and peaceful place until the late 1960s, when the first industrial plants were built and many of the pretty old teakwood houses were replaced by modern concrete buildings and skyscrapers. The city has always been a favourite destination for tourists from other parts of Thailand, especially from Bangkok, who enjoy the cooler climate and the mountain scenery and in recent years it is becoming increasingly popular for tourists from other countries as well. Chiang Mai's heart is its Old City, an area surrounded by vestiges of walls and moats originally constructed for defense; yet Chiang Mai is a modern city with a growing infrastructure of modern shopping malls and condominiums. The contrast is part of the town's charm. Chiang Mai, with an altitude of approximately 310 meters above sea level, is situated approximately 700 kilometers from Bangkok on the Mae Ping River basin. Surrounded by high mountain ranges, the city covers an area of approximately 20,107 square kilometers and is the country's second largest province. Chiang Mai has now become one of the most popular locations to visit for this festival. A variety of religious and fun-related activities (notably the good-natured city-wide water-fight) take place each year, along with parades and a Miss Songkran beauty competition. Chiang Mai also boasts Thailand's highest peak, Doi Inthanon, which is 2575m above sea level. Check out some of the local markets in the Mueang district. In Chiang Mai you can enjoy wonderful Thai food in a setting that mirrors the beauty of Thailand.
